IPL:
Everybody wants younger-looking, smoother, more radiant skin, but not everyone is prepared to deal with the recovery time associated with some of the more intense cosmetic procedures. Enter Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials. With no downtime, it’s no wonder this gentle rejuvenating treatment has become wildly popular. Dr Webster at Oregon Coast Plastic Surgery is proud to offer IPL Photofacials at his Coos Bay location.
What is IPL and who is a good candidate?
IPL uses high energy pulses of light to penetrate deep into the skin, targeting the dermis, to simultaneously remove damaged and photo-aged skin while stimulating collagen growth, a natural protein that helps to plump the skin and fill in wrinkles. Photofacials, aka photo rejuvenation, can improve the color, consistency, and texture of the skin all at once.
IPL is a great option to help treat a variety of skin concerns:
-Sun damage (sun spots)
-Fine lines and wrinkles
-Broken capillaries (blood vessels)
-Liver spots (age spots)
-Hyperpigmentation
-Rosacea
What to expect at your appointment
The nurse will apply a cool gel to your face and supply you with glasses to protect your eyes from the light. Once you’ve been prepped, a hand-piece with a cold, smooth surface will be ran along your skin as it pulses light. Most patients find this procedure to be pain-free, describing the brief stinging of the pulsating light to a rubber band snap. Afterward, you’ll be provided with a moisturizer containing SPF, and a cold-pack if desired. IPL photofacials are performed in a series, with each treatment lasting from approximately 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the amount of skin being treated. Typically, patients receive between 3 and 6 treatments, spaced about 4 weeks apart. Most people choose to treat their face, neck, shoulders, back, or hands, essentially any area that is most exposed to the sun and public.
What to expect after your treatment
While there is no real recovery time to speak of, some patients report mild symptoms that typically diminish within hours, but may last up to a few days after treatment. These include:
-mild swelling- a cold pack will help to prevent this
-redness- fairly common, typically goes away within hours.
-brown spots- if you underwent the procedure to treat dark spots and are suddenly faced with darker ones, don’t fret, this is normal and a good sign! IPL brings sun damage to the surface of the skin, where it then sloughs off.
Nevertheless, you can expect to resume to normal activities immediately after, including applying your usual facial creams and makeup. Benefits occur gradually in the weeks following treatment, and with each treatment, the results of IPL become more pronounced.
If there’s something you’d like to change about your skin, you can now consider photofacials for the job. They make the most sense for people who want a boost in their complexion without having to take time off from work. Sound too good to be true?
