Lip Injections: Everything you need to know

A plump pout is universally synonymous with youth, and an icon of sensuality. Lip augmentation is a simple, in-office procedure with little to no downtime, and easily one of the highest rated patient satisfaction procedures we do in our office, with virtually instant results and gratification.

As we grow older, the lips become thinner and fine vertical lines appear, making lipstick bleed. Fortunately, there are various lip augmentation techniques available. At Oregon Coast Plastic Surgery, we use a conservative eye and approach to achieve beautiful results. Whether you’re looking for natural, subtle volume, softening of the perioral lines, or an instant, noticeable plump, we’ve got you covered.

The most common product used for this procedure is a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Juvederm or Volbella. Hyaluronic acid is a clear, biodegradable substance that occurs naturally in the body’s joints and skin. Hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules once injected into the lips, allowing hyaluronic acid-based fillers to moisturize as well as plump the lips, and provide longer-lasting results than collagen augmentation. Unsure if you’ll love your new voluminous lips? A benefit of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be dissolved within minutes by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase. While it may bring peace of mind knowing the results are not permanent, we’re confident you’ll love the results we’re able to achieve. With results lasting 6-12 months, this is a great non-surgical option, allowing patients to test drive an augmented pout without investing in surgery.

What to expect at your appointment: An injector who cares about your preferences will take the time to discuss your goals and make an individualized treatment plan. You can expect your appointment to last approximately 30-45 minutes. Your lips will be numbed with a topical anesthetic prior to injecting to help ease discomfort. The injections are described as a pinch, and then a sting as the filler is being injected. Slight bruising and minimal bleeding is expected, you can aid in the prevention of this by avoiding blood thinners for a week prior to your appointment, such as NSAIDS, fish oil, and vitamin E. You can use topical or oral Arnica to reduce post-filler bruising and inflammation. Afterward, the nurse will massage your lips to smooth the filler, give you an ice pack, and let you go about your day. Swelling will be most noticeable in the first day or two, subsiding during the first week following your treatment.

If done correctly, lips with injections do not feel any different than real lips. Not even when you’re kissing! If you eventually decide to stop getting injections, your lips will return to their normal state, potentially slightly fuller. The hyaluronic acid that is injected has been proven to jump-start more HA and collagen production at the site of the injection, so your new natural lips could remain slightly plumped thanks to previous injections.
